The aim of this blog is to promote & provide expert advice on integrative health in Uganda. But it is really so much more than that. It is actually a very personal blog. I have worked as a hospital doctor for 25 years in three continents. Mostly I love my job. I am in awe of modern medicine, the dedication of my co-workers & the stories of the patients that I meet every day. That being said, there is so much more that I wish for modern medicine. I think that integrative health holds the solution to some of the troubling problems of our times. Simply put, integrative health recognizes that everything impacts on our health (it’s not just the virus stupid) & gives us permission to look outside of the traditional ‘disease-drug-surgery’ triad to use other proven healing modalities.
I am in awe of modern medicine, the dedication of my co-workers & the stories of the patients that I meet every day. That being said, there is so much more that I wish for modern medicine. Integrative Health is now used in major academic medical centres in the USA but not yet in Ireland. The timing is perfect for integrative health in Ireland. As a country we really need it. For the first time, new studies in brain science and epigenetics help us to make sense of how and why some proven complimentary & alternative practices work. As we wait for integrative health to develop in Ireland, it is really difficult for people to separate out the quackery from science. Many leading blogs on wellness are very poor quality & make misleading claims. It is irresponsible to say that a small study in mice can be used to make sweeping generalizations in humans.
I hope that this blog can fill the gap. I have just graduated from the fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona with Dr Andrew Weil & can’t wait to share the amazing things that he teaches – lifestyle medicine, culinary medicine, botanical & herbal medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Meso-American shamanism, meditation, mindfulness, energy medicine and so much more. This blog provides updates on the latest research in integrative health and reviews on the Irish wellness scene, through the lens of a western trained physician.
The blog also chronicles my ongoing ‘Andrew & Ceppie’ experiment, where I describe my personal experiences as I try out the best advice of Dr Andrew Weil.
The blog will have shorter post during the week and longer posts at the weekend. The tagline for the blog is ‘science – healing – business- spirituality’. I guess that I might need to explain this a little. Much of integrative health is highly relevant to leadership, self-mastery & business.
Spirituality in integrative health refers to ‘the thing that we live for’ or ‘the thing that gives our life meaning’. The blog is written for my colleagues, family, friends & of course for me. This blog does not reflect the opinions of my employers. As with any medical or wellness advice, please check in with your own doctor to make sure that any recommendations I make are safe for you and your personal story.
